Most of us don’t give much thought to the pressure in our eyes. However, as one of the leading causes of blindness, glaucoma can start with high eye pressure. Since January is glaucoma awareness month, it’s a good time to think about what to do to prevent this complex, sight-robbing disease.

How does glaucoma occur in the eye? With all types of glaucoma, the optic nerve connecting the eye to the brain is damaged — this usually occurs because of high eye pressure.

How common is glaucoma? According to glaucoma.org, in the USA, glaucoma affects more than 3 million people, and anyone from babies to seniors can be affected¹. And glaucoma is called the “sneak thief of sight” since as much as 40% of sight can be lost without a person even knowing they are losing sight². So regular eye doctor visits are vital to check that our eyes are healthy and free of glaucoma and other vision issues.

So, be sure to schedule comprehensive eye exams regularly. Your eyes, your windows to the world, will thank you!
